Offered is Gabby Hartnett's sterling-silver cigar box, presented to him for winning the 1935 National League MVP Award. The engraving on the lid reads "To Gabby Harnett/Chicago Cubs/National League Most Valuable Player 1935." The National League emblem is engraved above. The manufacturer's engravings on the bottom read "International Sterling/NC208." Considered one of the finest catchers of his era, Hartnett hit .344 with 13 home runs and 91 RBI during his 1935 MVP campaign. His efforts that season propelled the Cubs to the World Series, where they fell in six games to the Detroit Tigers. A six-time All-Star, Hartnett finished his career with 236 home runs, 1,179 RBI, and a .297 average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1955. The hinged box (7.5 x 1.25 inches) displays tarnishing and age wear throughout. Please note that the lid does not entirely close. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Hartnett's grandson.
