Rare circa 1910s J. F. Hillerich & Son "ball-balance" bat. The name of this bat is derived from its unique knob, which is bulbous in nature and resembles a small ball. The design was supposed to more evenly distribute the weight of the bat, so that it feels lighter in the batter's hands. These "ball-balance" bats were probably produced as an alternative to the similar-style "mushroom" bats produced by Spalding. Apparently, the "ball-balance" bat was not overly popular with players, hence its scarcity today. The offered example, which appears to exhibit a pair of repaired cracks (one on the knob and one on the handle), displays heavy use, with several dings and cleat marks. The center-brand stampings remain well defined. Length: 32 inches. Weight: 36.7 ounces. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
