Description

Extremely impressive six-piece silver tea set presented to Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson's wife to commemorate the Baltimore Orioles' championships of the 1890s. The engraving on the front of the largest piece (dispensary with spout) reads "To - The Captain's Wife," and the remaining pieces are marked with just the letter "R" on front. The markings on the underside of each piece reads "Barbour Silver Co/Silver Quadruple/1017." This ornate set is composed of the following pieces: large dispensary with spout (13 inches tall with lid), large pitcher (9.5 inches tall with lid), medium pitcher (7.5 inches tall with lid), small pitcher (4 inches tall), large sugar bowl (6 inches tall with lid), and small sugar bowl (4 inches tall). This six-piece set originates directly from Wilbert Robinson's great-grandson and is accompanied by a copy of a signed letter from him stating such. Wilbert Robinson was one of the key members of the legendary Baltimore Orioles during the 1890s. His Major League career ended in 1902, but he remained in professional baseball for the next season and a half as player/manager of Baltimore's entry in the Eastern League. After retiring to run his butcher shop in Baltimore, he was coaxed back into coaching by his old Orioles teammate John McGraw in 1909. In 1914, Robinson signed on as manager of the Brooklyn Robins, a position he held through the 1931 season. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1945. All of the pieces display light-to-moderate tarnishing. In Excellent condition overall. Total: 6 pieces. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
