Description

Team cabinet photo featuring 14 members of the Rollins College baseball team, circa 1903, including Hall of Fame pitcher Rube Waddell, posing together along the steps of a building. Produced by Ensminger Photography Studio out of Sanford, Florida, as noted along the base of the mount. Waddell is pictured in his Philadelphia Athletics uniform (second row, second from left). His Philadelphia Athletics teammate and batterymate, Ossee Schreckengost, also appears to be pictured in the top right, although that can't definitively be confirmed. Waddell and Schreck were recruited as ringers for Rollins College primarily for a rivalry game against neighboring Stetson University. On the day of the big game, however, upon the sight of the Philadelphia Athletics ace, Stetson forfeited. Waddell was enrolled at Rollins College for a few months in late 1902 and early 1903, taking a business course and serving as a baseball coach. He also pitched for the college on a few occasions before returning to the Athletics for spring training. The photo (7-1/2 x 4-3/8 inches) has several scratches and is in Very Good condition overall. The mount (8-3/8 x 5-1/4 inches) displays moderate handling wear, age spots, and faint pencil notations on the reverse. Good condition overall.
