Description

Imperial team cabinet photo featuring nine members of the circa 1881 Yale baseball team, including Walter Camp and "Wild Bill" Hutchison, posing together in a formal studio setting. Camp (bottom row, far left, gripping bat), a multi-sport athlete at Yale, is best remembered today for his contributions to a different sport. Commonly referred to as the "Father of American Football," Camp later enjoyed a long and successful coaching career and was responsible for many of the early innovations in the game. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951. Hutchison (top row, middle) went on to pitch nine seasons in the majors. A "workhorse" in every sense of the word, he led the National League in wins, games pitched, and innings three straight seasons (1890-1892) and twice topped 600 innings in a season. He finished his career with 182 wins and a 3.59 ERA. The photo (8-3/4 x 6-7/8 inches) is in Excellent condition overall. The mount, which has been trimmed to near identical dimensions as the photo, displays evidence of album removal on the reverse.
