Description

One-page typed letter, dated August 10, 1922, signed by Kenesaw Landis in his capacity as commissioner of baseball. In his letter, on official "Baseball" letterhead, Landis responds to an event invitation.

In full: "Dear Mr. Dooley: I am just in receipt of your letter of August 4, inviting me to attend the Tom McCarthy testimonial at Fenway Park on August 14. I am very sorry to be obliged to inform you that about thirty days ago, I called a joint meeting of the major league club owners for August 14 here at Chicago, which prohibits my accepting your invitation. Otherwise, most certainly I would be with you. With every earnest wish for the success of this most commendable enterprise. Very truly yours." It is signed "Kenesaw Landis" in black fountain pen. The letter (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two horizontal folds, a horizontal fold, a chipped top-right corner, and a stain in the bottom right. There is a black checkmark penned on the text. Good condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
