Description

On September 10, 1939, the Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox played a doubleheader at Shibe Park in front of a crowd of more than 23,000. The Red Sox won the first game 10-7 and the second game 5-1. Ted Williams, amid an excellent rookie season, hit a home run in each game (his 25th and 26th of the season and his career). However, it was an Old-Timer's exhibition in between games featuring stars from Athletics' teams of 1929-1931 versus stars of Athletics' teams of 1910-1914 that was the day's central attraction. Offered is a trio of items from that day. This collection consists of the following: 1) Official American League baseball (Harridge) signed in black ink by several Hall of Famers and stars who participated in the exhibition, including Jack Quinn and Jack Coombs (sweet spot), Chief Bender (twice), Mickey Cochrane, Harry Davis, Amos Strunk, and all four members of the famous "$100,000 Infield of the 1910s Athletics: Frank "Home Run" Baker, Eddie Collins, Jack Barry, and John "Stuffy" McInnis. Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. 2) Ticket stub. Graded FAIR 1.5 by PSA. 3) Program: The Centennial Anniversary Athletics Score Card features six of the teams greats on the cover: Baker, Bender, Collins, Cochrane, Foxx, and Grove. Inside, the unscored program features several newspaper clippings, highlighting moments from the Athletics Old -Timer's game, that have been pasted to the interior pages. The clippings go into great detail about the events of the day, describing the scoring plays that led to the 1910-1914 A's victory over the 1929-1931 A's by a margin of 6-4, William Harridge's presentation of the Judge McDevitt plaque to Connie Mack, Topsy Hartsel's injury (along with a photo of Hartsel being walked-off the field by Baker and Barry), Lefty Grove being congratulated by Mack, and the home runs of "Boston's wonderful yearling" Ted Williams. Additionally, the program has been signed by Paddy Livingston, Joe Bush, and Ira Thomas who were all members of the 1910-1914 Athletics team. Very Good condition overall. Incredible trio of items from a historical match-up featuring many Philadelphia Athletics greats, in addition to a stellar performance by Red Sox rookie, Ted Williams, before becoming one of the most prolific hitters in baseball history. Total: 3 items (signed baseball, ticket stub, and program).
