Exceedingly rare St. Louis Browns home uniform (jersey and pants) worn by pitcher Urban Shocker during the late teens to early 1920s. Graded A10 by MEARS. This might be the earliest St. Louis Browns jersey still in existence, as we have never seen another that predates it. It also enjoys the unique provenance of originating from a family member of pitcher Urban Shocker, who was a key member of the 1927 New York Yankees. The uniform is one of a number of items consigned to this auction by Shocker's great-grandson (the remainder of the collection, which includes photos, game-used equipment, and other such items, is offered elsewhere in this auction). The cream-colored button down flannel jersey, which predates uniform numbers, features the team's interlocking "SL" logo on the left sleeve in heavy felt. Located in the collar is a "Spalding" label. A white tag with no markings is in the collar as well. The garment is original as issued, with no alterations, and according to the MEARS LOA, it displays heavy wear, including one missing button. The matching cream-colored flannel pants feature a "Spalding" label in the waistband. Also located in the waistband is a white tag with no markings. The pants are heavily worn and have light staining throughout. Shocker spent seven seasons (1918-1924) with the Browns. He finished his 13-year career in 1928 with an impressive record of 187-117, a .615 lifetime winning percentage, and an ERA of 3.17. The offered uniform is exceptional in all respects, especially with regard to provenance and would make a substantial addition to any advanced collection. Graded A10 by MEARS (base grade of 10, with no deductions). Full LOA from MEARS. The uniform is accompanied by a large-format studio presentation photograph featuring Shocker wearing the same style uniform as the one being offered. The photographer, "Sid Whiting," has signed the photo in the lower right. The photo (13 x 19 inches) has a number of edge tears, including a large one in the center (repaired with tape on the reverse), and a small chip on the top edge. Fair condition. Total: 3 items (jersey, pants, and photo).
