Ticket stub issued for Game 6 of the 1947 World Series between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers at Yankee Stadium. Game 6 of the 1947 World Series featured one of the greatest plays in Series history and forever linked the names of Joe DiMaggio, one of the greatest players of all time, and Al Gionfriddo, a reserve outfielder who played only four years in the Major Leagues. The Dodgers were leading the Yankees 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning in Game 6 when DiMaggio came to the plate with two out and men on first and second. On the first pitch, DiMaggio lined the ball to deep left field, and it appeared to be headed over the fence, but Gionfriddo, who had just entered the game that inning as a defensive replacement, ran and made a spectacular leaping catch of the ball just as it was clearing the wall. In a rare show of emotion, DiMaggio, who was nearing second when Gionfriddo made the catch, kicked the dirt in disgust. That catch helped preserve the Dodgers' eventual 8-6 win. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, the Yankees won Game 7, which prompted yet another promise of "wait 'til next year" by the Flatbush faithful.
