Description

Oversized original composite photo featuring four members of the 1914 Philadelphia Phillies, produced by George Grantham Bain News Service. The players, identified in the photo's original intact caption below, are Hall of Fame pitcher Grover Alexander, Bill Killifer, Ben Tincup, and Herbert Murphy. Amongst the highlights in the caption are the team being referred to as the "Philadelphia Nationals," Alexander noted as the "Star Twirler," and the Bain News Service copyright at the bottom. During the early 20th century, at the beginning of each baseball season, Bain News Service published a composite photo featuring four players from each team. These photos appeared in a team's hometown newspaper along with national publications such as Sporting News and Baseball Reference. A handful of larger copies of each photo (such as the offered example) were also produced and posted at newsstands to advertise publication sales. Because these larger copies served as customer-facing display pieces, finding a sample, let alone one that is fully intact, is incredibly challenging. The photo (10 x 13 inches; visible dimensions) displays scattered creasing, a pair of small holes, and a small tear along the bottom edge (please note we have not examined the photo out of the frame). Apparent Good condition overall. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 16 x 23 inches. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
