Lot # 2469: 1912 New York Giants (vs. Boston Red Sox) World Series Program

Large-format program issued for the 1912 World Series between the New York Giants and Boston Red Sox, held at the Polo Grounds in New York. The colorful cover, which makes this program so ideal for display, features a beautiful illustration of Giants manager John McGraw displaying a scroll with the Giants' record from 1903 to 1912, and a small inset photo of team president John T. Brush. The interior pages include team photos of both the Giants and Red Sox, photos of Giants team executives, photos of both American and National League executives, and even a full-page political advertisement for the Democratic presidential ticket of Woodrow Wilson and Thomas Marshall. The preprinted lineups include Doyle, Snodgrass, Merkle, and Mathewson for New York, and Hooper, Speaker, Lewis, and Wood for Boston. The program is not scored, but a few of the boxes do contain pencil marks (meaning unknown). Boston eventually defeated the Giants in eight games (one game ended in a tie), with the Series regarded by many historians as one of the most exciting ever played. The victory also marked the first of Boston's four World Championships during the decade. The program (9 x 11 inches) displays a few small edge tears along the front cover, light creases, and surface abrasions along some of the interior pages and back cover. Good to Very Good condition overall.
