Description

Large die-cut advertising display panel, featuring St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Jim Bottomley, issued in promotion of Lucky Strike Cigarettes in 1929. The colorful cardboard display pictures Bottomley in uniform, with the text along the base reading "Jim Bottomley/N. L. most valuable player 1928/'Toasting gives a flavor/no other cigarette/can equal'." It should be noted that this piece is part of a much larger Lucky Strike retail display that also featured a die-cut panel picturing Mickey Cochrane who was the 1928 American League MVP. Cochrane and Bottomely formed the two end panels, while the center panel pictured a game-in-progress scene and an enormous package of Lucky Strike Cigarettes. This is the first Bottomley panel from this display that we have ever handled! The entire display is exceedingly rare. While we have seen a photo of it as issued in 1929, we have never seen one offered at auction. The offered piece (22.25 x 36.75 inches) displays a number of creases and appears to have been professionally restored. Very Good in its overall appearance. This is an exceptional retail advertising display piece, promoting a very well known product, issued at the height of Jim Bottomley's Hall of Fame career. Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 27.5 x 43 inches. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
