Description

Remarkable collection of 54 original artworks which formed the basis of a trading card set released in 2024 to commemorate the centennial of the first Negro Leagues World Series between the Hilldale Club and the Kansas City Monarchs. The trading card set is composed of 67 total cards, plus a bonus card inserted in a limited number of sets. Five different artists contributed to the design and execution of this set. Artwork from four of these artists is included in this collection. (The fifth artist, Graig Kreindler, painted the bonus card and his artwork is not included in this offering.) Artist Brian Kong produced 33 player cards on original 5" x 7" artworks. Artist Jeff Suntala produced 10 key play cards, which are three vignettes each made up of 20 different players, as well as four stadium cards or original 2.5" x 3.5" artworks. Artist Mike Kupka produced four team stat cards featuring the pitching and batting leaders for each club on original 5" x 7" artworks. Lastly, artist Darryl Matthews — son of Negro Leagues first baseman Fran Matthews of the Newark Eagles — produced three executive paintings, including Rube Foster who was not included in the set due to licensing issues, on original 10" x 12" artworks. This is an exceptional collection of original artwork from this unique themed occasion honoring the inaugural Negro Leagues World Series in 1924. All artwork remains in Near Mint condition. Total: 54 original artworks.
