Substantial 16-page, large-format program issued for a 1926 World Series game between the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals at Yankee Stadium. The interior pages include photos of league and team officials, as well as portraits of 25 members of both the Yankees and Cardinals. The preprinted lineups include Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Combs, and Meusel for New York, and Hornsby, Bottomley, and Hafey for St. Louis. The Cardinals defeated the Yankees in a dramatic seven-game Series in 1926, featuring one of the most memorable moments in postseason history. With the Cardinals clinging to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 7, Tony Lazzeri came to bat with the bases loaded and two out. Rogers Hornsby then summoned Grover Alexander, who had notched a complete-game victory the day before, from the bullpen. After Lazzeri brought the crowd to their feet with a line drive that landed just foul in the left-field stands, Alexander managed to strike him out to end the threat. Alexander then blanked the Yankees over the next two innings to give the Cardinals their first World Championship in franchise history. The program (9.25 x 11 inches) is unscored. Both covers, along with the page leading up to the Yankees' score page, are detached but included. Other flaws include moisture damage, edge tears, and a vertical fold down the middle. Poor condition overall. This program, along with several other items offered in this auction, originates directly from Urban Shocker's estate and is accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from his great-grandson.
