Description

Original photo of Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack at Columbia Park taken by noted baseball photographer George Grantham Bain. Encapsulated and certified as an original Type I George Grantham Bain photograph by PSA/DNA. Columbia Park was the first home of the Philadelphia Athletics, who played there from 1901 to 1908. The all-wooden structure had a limited seating capacity of 9,500, which club officials realized was inadequate given the team’s popularity. After the 1908 season, the ballpark’s sod was dug up and transferred to the A’s new home - Shibe Park. In this photo, manager Connie Mack supervises the sod’s removal (rolls of it can be seen behind him on the ground). A "Culver Service" credit stamp and Culver label appear on the reverse. Photos of Mack at Columbia Park are extremely scarce. The photo (4-5/8 x 6-1/2 inches) has two clipped corners (upper and lower left), a tiny chip missing on the left edge, and light rippling throughout. In Very Good condition overall.
