Lot # 2281: 1922 Old Timers Game Team Panoramic Photograph with Cy Young and Nap Lajoie

This impressive large-format panoramic photograph, taken by renowned Boston baseball photographer Carl Horner, pictures the participants in a special Old Timers' Day event that took place on September 11, 1922 at Braves Field in Boston. Among the many notables are Hall of Famers Cy Young, Nap Lajoie, Kid Nichols, Jesse Burkett, Johnny Evers, and Jack Chesbro. The caption and photographer's credit are each written in white calligraphy along the base. "Old Time Baseball Players....Braves' Field...Boston, Mass...Sept 11, 1922" is lettered along the bottom of the photo. A "Photo by Carl J. Horner. Boston, Mass" copyright stamp appears in the lower-right corner. It is likely that an original panoramic photograph was sent to each participating player as a gift of thanks for attending, as has long been the custom at such special events, and that this example almost certainly once belonged to one of the players. The photo (43-3/4 x 9-1/2 inches), which has outstanding clarity, has been affixed to a thicker backing and displays light creasing throughout. It is in Very Good condition overall.
